The wax can accumulate to the extent that the ear canal is completely bunged up with wax, as effectively as if window putty had been pushed into the ear. As it accumulates, the wax tends to block the opening of the ear, which leads to a vicious circle, with less and less wax being able to escape. The floppy ear has a tendency to limit the circulation of air in the ear, and the ear wax becomes static. Instead, it accumulates inside the ear canal, as a thick fudge-like dark brown sticky substance. In some dogs, the conveyor-belt process does not work well, and wax is not moved out of the ear. Most owners are unaware of the process, and their dogs’ ears remain healthy. The natural movement of the head combined with occasional head shaking means that tiny quantities of wax are continually shifted, as if along an invisible conveyor belt. Normally, the wax migrates naturally from the inside of the ear to the outside of the body. The wax has important functions, including keeping the ear surface shiny and healthy. ![]() The lining of a normal ear continually produces a secretion of small quantities of wax. Unfortunately, the floppy ear is not a good design for function. Even adult Bassett Hounds often need to have their ears tied above their heads then they eat, to prevent their ears dangling in their dinner! Ear Wax Some Bassett puppies almost trip over their ears. The most extreme version of the floppy ear is the Bassett Hound, whose ears almost scrape along the ground as they walk. ![]()
